Make Your School a Hub for Sustainable Learning with the Harp Home Composter
Schools across Ireland can now take advantage of the Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) Grant, receiving €1,000–€2,500 to introduce projects that teach sustainability while reducing environmental impact.
One exciting way to do this is by introducing home composters in your school. These small, safe systems allow everyday food scraps—like fruit and vegetable peelings, bread, and coffee grounds—to be transformed into nutrient-rich fertilizer through natural microbial activity. Students can watch this process unfold, learning how small actions create big environmental benefits.
By implementing a system that safely transforms everyday food waste into nutrient-rich fertilizer, students can see first-hand how small actions make a big difference. These projects provide opportunities to:
- Engage students in hands-on learning about composting, biology, and sustainable resource management.
- Reduce the school’s environmental footprint by diverting food waste from landfill.
- Support school gardens and outdoor learning spaces with rich, natural fertilizer.
- Foster environmental stewardship as students take part in meaningful, real-world sustainability initiatives.
Last year, a primary school in Carlow added a Harp Home Composter to their Green Schools project, turning food scraps into fertilizer for their garden while giving students hands-on experience in sustainability. The initiative has since become a model for how simple actions can create lasting environmental benefits in schools.

With the ESD Grant, your school can become a leader in sustainability—empowering students, enriching local ecosystems, and turning food waste into a valuable learning resource.
